How Implant Treatment Works at Wellen Family Dental
Implant treatment takes longer than most dental procedures because osseointegration cannot be rushed. Here is the full process so you know what to expect from consultation through to your finished tooth.
Consultation and Examination
Dr. Smith examines the gap, reviews bone levels on X-ray, and discusses whether any preparatory treatment such as extraction, bone grafting, or periodontal therapy is needed first. You receive a written cost estimate for the full plan.
Preparatory Treatment If Needed
Extractions, bone grafting, or gum disease treatment are completed and healing time is allowed before placement. Not every patient needs this step.
Implant Placement
The area is numbed and the titanium post is placed into the jawbone. The procedure typically takes under an hour for a single implant. A healing cap is placed on top and the gum is closed around it.
Osseointegration
The implant fuses with the surrounding bone over three to six months. During this period, you are monitored at check-in appointments and a temporary restoration keeps the space held if needed.
Abutment placement
Once integration is confirmed, the healing cap is replaced with an abutment, the connector piece that will support the final crown. A short healing period follows.
Impressions and Crown Fabrication
An impression or scan of the abutment is taken and sent to the dental laboratory, where your custom crown is made to match the shade and shape of your surrounding teeth.
Fitting and Cementing the Crown
The finished crown is seated, checked for fit and bite, adjusted as needed and permanently attached. Dr. Smith checks every contact point before the appointment ends.
Ongoing Maintenance
